Good sensible healthy approach to a subject that really should not be taboo at all. However, due to the natural law, and the clear definitive teaching of the Church, many persons including youths have sufficient understanding to know that masturbation is gravely immoral. Serious sin must always involve a fully deliberate choice of what one fully realizes to be seriously wrong.

To be sure, it is clear from Scripture that illicit sexual fantasies are forbidden, and this is a significant issue with masturbation. Subjectively it can be lessened if it's out of addiction or some other factor, but I don't think the two you list would qualify per se.
